Filmmaker and Founder of Theta State Studios | Meet Nicholas Allard
We had the pleasure of connecting with Nicholas Allard, founder of Theta State Studios. He shared more about his creative journey, lessons learned, and his vision for building a business that empowers storytellers.
Hi Nick, we’d love to hear more about how you got started.
Honestly, it all started with Star Wars. I saw it as a kid and that was it—I knew I wanted to make movies. From there, I started filming little scenes with my siblings (I’m the oldest of six, so there were plenty of actors on hand) and eventually went to school for film. After graduating with a film degree in 2016, I had to face the reality of building a career from scratch.
I thought the only path forward was through big sets and huge crews, but then I started seeing content creators doing brand work on YouTube and realized I could use my creative skills in business, too. That sparked the idea for Theta State Studios, my video production company. At first, it was just a way to build experience and make connections, but it’s grown into something much bigger. Today, we create everything from commercials and streaming content to longform storytelling and social proof videos for businesses.
What’s been the most important lesson you’ve learned since starting your business?
That clear is better than clever, and done is better than perfect. As a creative, it’s easy to get stuck chasing perfection, but when you run a business, you have to prioritize impact and efficiency. I had to learn how to balance artistry with strategy—how to make things I’m proud of that also make sense for the client and the business.
One of the best things I did was start networking like crazy. I reached out to local businesses offering free videos in exchange for portfolio work, and those relationships helped launch everything. I also leaned heavily into mentorship. I wouldn’t be where I am without the people I’ve surrounded myself with—your network really is your net worth.
What do you love most about what you do?
I love helping people tell their stories. Whether that’s a small business owner trying to build their brand or a nonprofit looking to raise awareness, video is such a powerful tool. And as a business owner, I’m building something that I hope will eventually support other creatives, too.
Long-term, I want to create multiple divisions—narrative filmmaking, animation, video games, and more. I don’t want to just build a company—I want to build a creative playground where others can thrive and collaborate across mediums.
What’s one thing about you that most people don’t know?
I’m a black belt. Martial arts has been a big part of my life—it’s given me discipline and confidence, and it taught me how to stay calm under pressure. It’s one of those things that’s shaped how I show up, both personally and professionally.
What’s your favorite way to unwind or recharge in the Pacific Northwest?
I’m a homebody at heart. I love watching films, playing games, and just enjoying some quiet downtime. But when I do get out, Spokane is full of great spots to explore. There’s something about discovering a tucked-away café or a cool downtown bar that just makes this area special.
A few favorite places? Emmaru’s downtown turned me into a cocktail guy—it’s a European-style café that’s become a go-to. I also love The Loren and Revival Tea’s hidden basement lounge. And in Coeur d’Alene, the Innovation Den has this secret room that feels like a whole different world. That kind of stuff makes the PNW such a fun place to live and work.
What’s next for you and Theta State Studios?
Right now, I’m focused on building a team. I’ve never wanted to do this alone—it’s way more fun and effective when you have other people in the mix. We’re also starting to explore animation and have some exciting collaborations in the works. And someday, I still plan to get back into narrative filmmaking. That’s where it all began for me, and the goal has always been to return to storytelling on my own terms—with a team of passionate people by my side.
