Building Community Through Art | Meet Skyler Oberst
We had the pleasure of connecting with Skyler Oberst, a dedicated team member at the Spokane Arts Fund. Skyler is passionate about building a thriving community for artists in the Pacific Northwest, where creativity and connection go hand in hand. Here’s more about his journey and his vision for Spokane’s vibrant arts scene.
What inspired you to start your journey or business? What was your “aha” moment?
Skyler’s journey with the Spokane Arts Fund is rooted in his desire to create a community where artists not only thrive but can also retire comfortably from their craft. He admits that he sometimes falls into the trap of overthinking and doubting himself, but by adopting healthier mindsets, he has found the courage to move forward.
"If you're not careful, you may fall into the trap of doubting yourself. I found that through healthier mindsets, you can unlock your inner potential and harness the courage to move forward," Skyler shared.
What do you love most about what you do?
For Skyler, it’s a tie between helping people achieve their dreams and working with a team that values humor and decency as foundational elements of their mission.
"Probably a solid tie between helping people get to where they want to go, and that I get to work with a team that sees value in humor and decency as cornerstones of our mission," he said.
His role allows him to play a part in reminding people why they love the Pacific Northwest, and how art makes the region more livable, vibrant, and colorful.
How does your work or passion contribute to the Pacific Northwest community?
Skyler feels incredibly grateful to live in the "upper left" of the country, where the natural landscape is as diverse as the community itself. He believes that people in the Pacific Northwest have a unique understanding of the connection between the environment and their own lives.
"On a daily basis, I get to play a small part in reminding folks why we live here. We do that by making the world a little more livable, vibrant, and colorful for everyone," Skyler explained.
Through his work at Spokane Arts, Skyler fosters a community spirit that celebrates resilience, creativity, and the idea that happiness is something you build.
What inspires or motivates you every day?
Skyler finds motivation in the long-term impact of his work, knowing that it helps shape the future for generations to come.
"Reminding myself that through our collective actions, we're teaching our grandchildren and their grandchildren the lessons of who we are, and what we value as a community," he reflected.
What advice would you give to someone looking to follow a similar path?
Skyler’s advice is rooted in adventure and adaptability:
"Book a trip to a place on another continent, where you don't know the language and customs. Make your way from the airport to your destination using only public transportation. If you can do that, you'll be ready for anything."
This mindset not only builds resilience but also encourages personal growth through embracing new experiences.
What are your goals for the next 1-3 years?
Skyler’s most immediate goal? Teach his dog, Bowie, how to properly fetch!
"He's a total space cadet!" Skyler laughed.
On a professional level, Skyler hopes to continue fostering a thriving arts community in Spokane, building more programs that allow artists to see a future in their craft.
What’s something people might not know about you?
Skyler has a quirky and creative side—he likes to carry a bag of peel-and-stick googly eyes and leave them around town. It’s his way of spreading a little unexpected joy and creativity throughout the community.
What’s your favorite way to relax or recharge in the Pacific Northwest?
For Skyler, nothing beats being out in nature with his partner and their dogs. They love spending time by the river or the lake, watching their pets attempt to fetch. It’s a simple way to disconnect from stress and appreciate the beauty around them.
"A lot can be healed being around water—or semi-intelligent golden retrievers," he joked.
What’s a hidden gem in the Pacific Northwest that everyone should know about?
Skyler believes the best hidden gems are the ones you stumble upon without planning. Whether it’s a dive bar with an alley entrance in Portland, a cozy antique store outside Renton that serves wine and homemade cookies, or a hidden beach at Priest Lake, he encourages people to explore and discover these gems for themselves.
"They're all out there—go find 'em!" he said with a smile.
